The claim that vibrations created by a collective sound of clapping or banging utensils can kill the virus is misleading as there is no proven scientific evidence that vibrations created by collectively clapping/banging utensils can destroy coronavirus.
Recently, to mitigate the spread of Coronavirus in India, Prime Minister urged the people of India to observe a self-implemented curfew, 'Janta-Curfew', on March 22 from 7 AM to 9 PM. PM also made an appeal to everyone clap at 5 pm to show gratitude to the helpers and medical practitioners who are working relentlessly to fight coronavirus. Following this, a message circulated on social media claiming that clapping/ banging utensils together at 5 pm would make such a "vibration" in the atmosphere that coronavirus will be destroyed. This message is being forwarded on WhatsApp and other social messaging apps.
A user named Renuka Jain posted on twitter, "The 5 pm clapping Modi asked us to do is extremely interesting. At that time Moon is passing to a new 'nakshatra' called Revati. The playing of bells and clapping: The cumulative vibration will encourage blood circulation in the body. "
At the time this article, this tweet has been reshared more than 650 times.
Another Twitter user named while replying to a tweet by PM Modi made similar claims, where the user wrote, "Great Modiji, this step will motivate & unite people to fight against coronavirus. Also banging thali as we do in mandir's will kill most of the virus in India due to random successive noise vibrations."
We found this viral claim to be misleading as there is no proven scientific evidence that vibrations created by collectively clapping/banging utensils can destroy coronavirus.
PIB Factcheck also called out this viral claim to be false. PIB debunked this misinformation saying that the vibration generated by clapping together will NOT destroy coronavirus infection.
In conclusion, the claim that vibrations created by a collective sound of clapping or banging utensils can kill the virus is misleading as there is no proven scientific evidence that vibrations created by collectively clapping/banging utensils can destroy coronavirus.
